Justine Shapiro, B.Z. Goldberg and Carlos Bolado What is it really like to live in Jerusalem? Promises offers fresh insight into the Middle East conflict when Shapiro, Goldberg and Bolado travel to this complex and charged city to see what seven children--Palestinian and Israeli--think about war, peace, and just growing up. Living within 20 minutes of each other, these children are nevertheless locked in separate worlds. Through candid interviews, the film explores a legacy of distrust and bitterness, but signs of hope emerge when some of the children dare to cross the checkpoints to meet one another. Devils Tower. The Four Corners. Mount Shasta. All places of extraordinary beauty and impassioned controversy as Indians and non-Indians struggle to co-exist with very different ideas about how the land should be used. For Native Americans, the land is sacred and akin to the worlds greatest cathedrals. For others, the land should be used for industry and recreation. Narrated by Peter Coyote and Tantoo Cardinal (Metis), In the Light of Reverence is a beautifully rendered account of the struggles of the Lakota in the Black Hills, the Hopi in Arizona and the Wintu in California to protect their sacred sites. (Christopher McLeod, Producer/Director; Malinda Maynor (Lumbee), Co-Producer; POV; Independent Television Service & Native American Public Telecommunications). The film adaptation of Anna Deavere Smith's acclaimed one woman play premieres on PBS April 29 at 9PM as part of the Thirteen/WNET New York's STAGE ON SCREEN drama series. Directed by Marc Levin, the film interweaves Smith's performance with documentary footage. Not only does Smith's virtuoso performance capture the tumultuous aftermath of the Rodney King trial verdict, she gives voice to dozens of real-life people from all sides of the conflict who she interviewed and whose words she speaks -- from a Korean grocer to a Hollywood agent to a juror to NRA leader Charlton Heston. This powerful film has an extraordinary -- possibly unprecedented -- potential to stimulate far-reaching dialogue across races, classes and generations.
