Yes the U.S like every other country has its own problems, but troops are only stationed in places like the Middle East because our country was attacked or the country's government proves incapable of governing itself. If the U.S were not to keep countries within the Middle East in check, there could be a great threat to our nation's security as well as to the security of other nations like Isreal. I believe that the United States is one of the greatest countries in the world, and will continue to make awesome contributions to the whole world.

In my opinion, the US is the greatest country in the world.Yeah,we have our problems, like the drug problem and prostitution, but we haven't done like some other countries in the world and legalized them to ignore the problem,we try to solve the problem. 1 problem that they do ignore is abortion, instead of that being legalized we need to work and solve the problem, abortion is not the answer,it's part of the problem. Americans... as I people I admire them. There attitude, the way they percieve the world... it can be irritating at times but the American people have the best thoughts and intentions at heart. However, I do not believe this can be applied to the big buisnesses and government of America. They are the groups that have generated much of the unpleasentness over many contriversial issues. They are the ones who seek money and power. At least, thats my interpretation. We can not judge America alone, the UK has to answer to this to. What is Tony Blair thinking? I'm afraid we may not know till it's too late. Its not Americans who I blame for much of the controversy that their country suffers, its the individuals who call themselves Americans, but act as though they are politions without a country to represent and a reputation to stand up to. America, and the world needs a positive direction to head in. And we need great people to lead the way.

— Dale, New Zealand (9/4/2006)

I think that some countries misguide their public about the United States public. America is a free, democratic country that gives as much power as possible to its people.

I disagree with the comment about the United States president wanting to take over the world. Our president's actions are for the best of our country, he makes overall decisions to create a better country. Therefore, I do not think our presidency is corrupt, our president is doing the best of his ability for the Unites States of America.

— Catie, Massachusetts (9/8/2006)

I don't agree that America is the greatest country, but i can't compare it to others because the only other country i've been to is Canada. I do agree though that America as a whole is money hungry and superficial. The United States is a pretty safe place to live compared to other countries despite the issues we have with crime and violence.

— Devan, Massachusetts (9/8/2006)

Freedom, a word often misused by the American people. We often take for granted what other countries do not have and believe me when I say that we do not approve of the war any more than people over seas. President Bush made this executive decision for a reason, to help a nation under complete political corruption and terror. For this I respect him and others should too. Although I do not agree with his remaining in Iraq and other parts of the world he is our president and we need to show respect for him and other nations.

— Scoot, USA (9/8/2006)

In my mind America is the best country in the world. Many of the comments by people not from the U.S on this website are blaming us for their horrible problems. STOP IT!!!!

— andy rianhard, medfield (9/8/2006)

I am an American and I love this country. However, I cannot deny the fact that it has its problems, just like every other country. The world is full of problems and the US definetly contributes. But it is not fair for all the other countries to blame the US for all of this. The US helps many nations throughout the world financially, militarily and otherwise. The common stereoype against America is invalid because many people consider us all to be fast food addicted war mongerers. The other majority opinion is that America is perfect. Both of these are not true. Nor can I say that Americans don't have prejudices against other countries. But it is unfair to make the US out to be the bad guy so much of the time when they help as much as they do.

— Nick, America (9/8/2006)

It seems like foreigners have a more accurate representation of us then fellow Americans do. This could be because they have a different perspective that isn't shadowed by our pride. Americans don't want to admit that they don't have a good government or have made bad desicions in the past. Ignorance is the best word to describe Americans.

Say the words "Beirut" or "Lebanon" to anyone over 30 and they would probably free associate words like "kidnapped American citizens," "Terry Waite," "civil war" and "scary." But that was the 1980s. Beirut today is the most populous city in Lebanon, a major tourist attraction and the site of the thriving American University, a private college founded in 1866 under a charter from New York state. Documentary filmmaker and NPR reporter Kate Seelye visited the campus in the Fall of 2005 to talk to graduate students about their views of American policies in the Middle East. (4:21 minutes)
