"I had to start from scratch, but I think I have some brains
on me."
Read what Cecilia has to say about who she is and where she comes from.
My name is Cecilia Garza and I am a 19-year old
Mexican-American woman from Elsa, Texas. I have come a long way from
being another misguided teenager to becoming a well-educated Latina.
My dream is to bring love, support and inspiration into young lives
through the power of education. I believe that my perseverance through
some of the most trying times has gotten me where I am today New
York City pursuing a degree in Latino Studies at Columbia University.
I am very grateful for the opportunities that I have received, and
some day I will be able to do the same for others.
The Garza Family has resided in Texas for generations,
and continues to do so in Elsa, a small rural border town at the tip
of Texas. My mother, grandparents, aunts, uncles and all the children
have been my strength through the good, the bad, and the confusing.
My family is full of devoted Christians, and they have helped me come
closer to God in more recent times. When we are faced with a problem,
no matter how big or small, we tackle it as a family. We may not be
the kind of familia that expresses a lot of emotion, but our love
and loyalty runs deep inside and needs no words. My mother has been
my biggest supporter all my life, even when I have disappointed her
the most. She has never lost faith in me. I am thankful that God has
blessed me and my family. |
