Take Action

Find out what services are provided to English Language Learners (ELLs) in your school district. Consider what other services ELL students may need and work with the district and community to provide them.

Volunteer at a local agency (e.g., Literacy Volunteers of America) that helps people learn English and/or prepare for job interviews, complete applications and the like.

Provide a public but safe opportunity for asylum seekers or undocumented workers and their families to tell their stories. During the event, distribute handouts with accurate information about immigrants and immigration policy.

Create an interactive "dream professions" art exhibit where people are invited to post (in writing, image or representation) their dream jobs. Then invite the community to look at, and be inspired by, its dreams. Consider inviting speakers (especially first- and second-generation immigrants) from the neighborhood who achieved their dream professions to share their stories.
