Her documentaries, which often explore political and social issues through personal stories, have won over 50 international and domestic awards at film festivals, have opened theatrically in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and sold to broadcasters such as PBS, CBC, Channel 4, ARD, Canal Plus and HBO. Major films include Punitive Damage, Georgie Girl, Sheilas, Pacific Solution, Elgar's Enigma, An Island Calling and Brother Number One. Her most recent film He Toki Huna: New Zealand in Afghanistan was nominated for 4 awards at the 2013 Rialto Channel Film Awards, receiving the "Moa" for Best Editor. She is currently in postproduction on the documentary feature Caught in the Web.
Annie is also an academic, who publishes widely in books and journals and through her teaching, has mentored many younger filmmakers. She holds an ONZM for services to film and received her PhD at the University of Auckland where she current teaches in screen production and in theory.
