Helfand co-founded Working Films, a nationally recognized organization dedicated to leveraging the power and prestige of documentary for economic, social and environmental justice. She and Daniel Gold formed a production company, Toxic Comedy Pictures, to create projects with a social conscience and a sense of humor.

Susanne Rostock was described as "a visual and aural poet" by the judges of the San Francisco International Film Festival when awarding top documentary honors to Passin' It On, for which she also received an Emmy nomination for editing.
