California's Central Valley:

To highlight and promote diversity in California’s Central Valley, KVIE Channel 6 has engaged local leaders from educational institutions, ethnic organizations, and businesses. KVIE has created a partnership with Capital Unity Council, a local organization formed after a rash of hate crimes that is aimed at promoting diversity and respect for all people. KVIE is proud to be a partner with TRI in the station’s Many Faces/Many Voices outreach campaign on diversity.

Activity Highlights:

  • In October 2000, TRI worked with KVIE to create a community town hall discussing cross-cultural adoption. Previews of “First Person Plural” and “Journey of Hope,” a local production, were shown and the discussion widened to encompass self-identification. Community leaders and students were invited to attend. The town hall was taped and broadcast on KVIE Channel 6 with the premiers of “First Person Plural” and “Journey of Hope.”
  • In August 2001, TRI worked with KVIE to facilitate a panel discussion with local Native Americans about “In the Light of Reverence.” KVIE partnered with the Maidu Interpretive Center, a local Native American center, who hosted the meeting.
  • In October 2001, TRI worked with KVIE and the Capital Unity Council to create outreach opportunities for “Local News.” Capital Unity Council hosted a panel discussion with leading local media, at which KVIE aired excerpts from “Local News.” In addition, KVIE hosted a meeting of local reporters to begin to build a resource of local reporters who understand how to work with the community they serve.
