Filmmaker Bios

Dongnan ChenDongnan Chen (Filmmaker/Co-director) is a New York-based documentary filmmaker. Originally from China, she has worked at media organizations in both China and the United States. Chen is now working on the post-production of her independent film "The Trail from Xinjiang," which chronicles the lives of three young men who were abducted as children from China's remote west and now find stealing the only way to survive in big cities.

Julia DoranJulia Doran (Filmmaker/Co-director) hails from a large family of storytellers and has always been drawn to languages and the power of narrative. Though originally from Ottawa, Canada, she is currently based in New York. Doran is a producer and videographer, as well as a contributing editor to Discosalt Magazine.

Konstantin SyominKonstantin Syomin (Filmmaker/Cinematographer) earned a B.A. in journalism from Ural State University (Russia) in 2001 and an M.A. in news and documentary from New York University in 2011. Since 2000, Syomin has worked as correspondent and news anchor for TV Russia (Moscow). At some point, he realized that every storyteller needs to be a shooter. He entered the world of DSLR cameras in 2011 and then fully converted to being a D.J. (digital journalist).

Loretta van der HorstLoretta van der Horst (Filmmaker/Co-director) is a Lima-based journalist and filmmaker. She specializes in all aspects of nonfiction video production. Born in Holland, she worked as a journalist in Chile, covering the earthquake and tsunami in 2010. She then served as correspondent from Santiago to report on the murder case involving Dutchman Joran van der Sloot, the prime suspect in the Natalee Holloway disappearance. She recently finished a documentary about life after the Chile tsunami and is working on a film about a Chilean revolutionary fighting deportation from the United States. She holds an M.A. from New York University's news and documentary journalism program.

Joseph VeleJoseph Vele (Filmmaker/Co-director) is the creative director of Discosalt Magazine, an independent music, film and art publication. He is a co-founder of the Discosalt Artist Collective and has directed and produced a range of short films and multi-media projects. Vele also created the Discosalt app. He currently resides in New York City.
