Because the tumor is very close to the region of the brain that controls speech, Theobold is asked to speak continuously so that Marsh and the other doctors will be able to gauge their progress. A nurse shows Theobold a series of picture cards, and he is asked to identify the object shown on each card and state what it does. The surgical team must stop after two hours, but they are able to remove 98% of the tumor – twice what they would have been able to remove if the patient had been unconscious during surgery.
