Filmmaker Bio

Lourdes PortilloLourdes Portillo, a San Francisco-based filmmaker, has been writing, producing and directing independent films since 1979. Born in Chihuahua, Mexico in 1944, Portillo emigrated to Los Angeles with her family when she was 13 years old. Her film and video work includes the Academy Award-nominated film Las Madres: The Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (1983) which was broadcast on POV, the comic short Columbus on Trial, and the critically acclaimed feature The Devil Never Sleeps (1994). Winner of a 1999 CalArts/Alpert Award in the Arts Fellowship, she is currently working with producer Jennifer Maytorena Taylor (Paulina) on the new documentary Death Comes to the Maquilas, which focuses on the ongoing serial murders of female factory workers in the border city of Juarez, Mexico.
