Live from the Octagon Theater at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in Montgomery, on February 25th Alabama Public Television hosted a webcast of the final episode of its Project C: Lessons from the American Civil Rights Movement electronic field trip series. Thousands of students across the country joined via live stream and more than 250 Alabama high school students, youth activists, education experts and community leaders made up a live studio audience for the youth town hall discussion on race and equality, educational justice and youth activism.
Students had a strong voice in the episode with recorded interviews, representation on panels, real-time Q&A sessions and live polls. A panel discussion on educational equity and college achievement featured clips from All the Difference (POV 2016), by Oscar®-nominated producer/director Tod Lending and co-executive produced by Wes Moore and Joy Thomas Moore. Robert Henderson, one of the two young men featured in the film, joined the panel to share his experience as a first-generation college student, the challenges he faced and the factors that led to his success.
The event was made possible by American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen, a national public media initiative made possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to help local communities keep more students on the path to graduation, college and careers.
