Filmgate 2014 returns to Miami, February 1 – February 5, 2014, bringing together leading international creators, thinkers and practitioners in the field of cross-media storytelling.

The latest ideas and innovations of modern storytelling, audience engagement and business practices will be showcased — in film, TV, interactive, online, mobile, gaming, publishing and live events — and POV will be there with a special retrospective program!

POV (a cinema term for “point of view”) is television’s longest-running showcase for independent non-fiction films. POV premieres 14-16 of the best, boldest and most innovative programs every year on PBS. But at Filmgate, POV is digging into its 27-year archive to showcase never-before-seen online experiments, early crowdsourcing projects, and other pioneering multimedia from its digital past. The archive will be presented in interactive kiosks exclusively at Filmgate and free to the public between February 1 and February 2, 2014, at Miami Beach Cinematheque.

The kiosks will also include new presentations of projects incubated at the POV Hackathon lab series, including Empire, Cpm-703 and The Aatsinki Season, each of which will also be presented live by the creators to audiences on Sunday, February 2. (View the schedule below.)

POV will also be premiering its new newsgame, The Reportero Challenge, which asks users to take on the role of a Mexican newspaper editor amid rampant government corruption and warring drug cartels. The Filmgate event coincides with the free online streaming of the POV documentary Reportero, directed by Bernardo Ruiz, which follows a veteran reporter and his colleagues at Zeta, a Tijuana-based independent newsweekly, as they stubbornly ply their trade in one of the deadliest places in the world for members of the media.

Since 1988, POV has presented over 300 films to public television audiences across the country. POV films are known for their intimacy, their unforgettable storytelling and their timeliness, putting a human face on contemporary social issues.

In celebration of the Filmgate retrospective, POV is also giving away a box set of DVDs from POV’s first 20 years, including the landmark Tongues Untied, the Academy Award-winning Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision and Best Boy, The Peabody Award-winning Regret to Inform and Silverlake Life: The View From Here, and the feature film from POV’s first broadcast, American Tongues.

Here’s a taste of what else you can expect from POV at Filmgate!
