Civic Frame's 10th Anniversary Documentary Film Series Opens with Tod Lending's “Omar & Pete”

Omar & Pete

On Saturday, January 14, 2012, Civic Frame kicks off its 10-year-anniversary celebration with a free screening of Omar & Pete, Tod Lending’s documentary that follows two men who’ve been in and out of prison for 30 years and are now re-entering life in Baltimore City. Omar & Pete was broadcast on POV in September 2005.

The screening will be held at the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore at 1 PM.

April Yvonne Garrett, founder of Civic Frame and Amplify Baltimore, is hosting the screening. Check out her interview on WYPR’s Maryland Morning with Tom Hall, where she discusses the program and 10 years of Civic Frame.

Garrett says she selected Omar & Pete as the first film in the series because some of the best work Civic Frame has done as an organization was in 2004 around the issue of re-entry and that the challenges facing former offenders have only become more pronounced since that time.

To compliment this screening, the first episode of season two of Amplify Baltimore focused on offender reentry in Baltimore. In the episode April interviews William “Pete” Duncan and Andre G. Fisher, LaTanya Scott Johnson, and Marshall Cullen, the ex-offender advocates who guided Pete’s ultimately successful reentry into society.

William “Pete” Duncan will join Garrett for the post-screening panel discussion with a host of other re-entry advocates, including Charles N. Curlett (attorney with Levin & Curlett, LLC), Andre G. Fisher (Druid Heights CDC), Michelle Kelly (Alternative Directions), Cameron Miles (Mentoring Male Teens in the Hood) and Howard Wicker (The Living Classrooms Foundation).
