The Flaherty NYC Winter/Spring 2018 “Common Visions” program runs every other Tuesday night at 7pm, from January 16th to March 27th at Anthology Film Archives.

Programmed by Almudena Escobar López and Herb Shellenberger, “Common Visions” delves into collective and collaborative works. Below, Shellenberger shares what influenced their programming.

In programming this winter’s Flaherty NYC series “Common Visions,” we tried to highlight a diversity of works and practices that were centered around a spirit of collaboration. We took this to include not only works that were produced collectively, by multiple filmmakers or through a relationship between filmmaker and performer/participant/audience, but also through works that explored the commons, the public sphere or cultural memory, things that are shared among all of us either formally or informally. What emerged from our research and selection is a group of works that in their construction feel both untidy and urgent, works that embrace the unexpected and open-ended. This is true across techniques, eras and geography: the “Open Form” films made by Polish duo KwieKulik in the 1970s have the same stakes as the collaborative performance videos shot on location by contemporary broadcast project E.S.P. TV. The bodies posed in an empty, abstracted landscape in Italian artist Luca Maria Patella’s 1967 film Terra Animata look eerily similar to those of Nadia Granados and Amber Bemak in their 2017 video Borderhole, though the two works employ them to in an examination formal and socio-political concerns, respectively. While we hope there are multiple threads throughout “Common Visions” that our audience will pick up on, the dialectic between works made past and present is an important one that we feel helps get to the root of what can make collaborative works feel so urgent, untidy and infused with a sense of liveness.
