William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe

It’s been a busy week here at the POV offices. We’re getting ready to kick off our 2010 summer season with the premiere of William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe next Tuesday, June 22. The film will air on PBS stations at 9 p.m. (check your local listings here), and after the East coast broadcast, filmmakers Emily and Sarah Kunstler will chat live with viewers at 11:30 p.m. EST. Sign up for a reminder or leave your questions for them now. We’ve also put up a fascinating interview with the Kunstler sisters, who talk about being their father’s daughter, and the similarity between being a documentary filmmaker and a trial lawyer. You can also explore William Kunstler’s life and career in a multimedia timeline and check out some of the hate mail he — once called “the most hated lawyer in America” — received.

There are also a number of doc-related events going on this week and next. The Human Rights Watch Film Festival runs through June 24th, when it closes with POV’s Presumed Guilty. Check out an article in The New York Times about some of the films playing at the festival.

Next week at the 92Y Tribeca in New York City, filmmaker Gemma Cubero will present a screening of her film (co-directed by Celeste Carrasco), Ella es el Matador, a film that follows two female matadors (POV 2009). For the film’s website, POV created an interactive feature that shows the anatomy of a bullfight.

The Silverdocs Documentary Festival starts on Monday, June 21, and doc lovers can gorge themselves on the great slate of films that will be screened (including many upcoming POV films). In addition, the festival also presents many fantastic workshops, including the PBS Interactive Workshop: Building Your Digital Toolbox with POV Interactive Director Theresa Riley, and a Funding/Self-Distribution Case Study with POV alums Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly, whose The Way We Get By was a self-distributed hit.

So have a great, doc-filled weekend, and don’t forget that for the rest of the summer, POV will be on PBS every Tuesday evening, starting with William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe on June 22nd!
