back to regret to inform

If you could write a letter to anyone, living or dead, about the war in Vietnam, who would it be? What would you say?

What if it were another war, one long ago or happening today? What healing words do you have to offer to others? What words of reconciliation would you like to hear?

Expanding on ideas from REGRET TO INFORM, LETTERS FROM THE HEART is a growing, organic memorial to those on all sides who lost their lives in Vietnam - a tapestry created by those left behind and others who support peaceful alternatives to war. The concept is simple: healing wounds through letter writing. Sharing stories to deepen understanding. Reaching out to forge new connections.

Since letters are a universal means of communication, anyone may participate. Here, you can write a letter to someone who died, send a message to your political representative, or bring comfort to others who may have been affected by war.

A widow might write to her husband. A son or daughter might write to the father they never met. An American widow might write to a Vietnamese widow. A Vietnamese American might write to the grandmother he or she left behind. A World War II veteran might write to his fallen comrade, or to the stranger who pulled him out of danger and disappeared. A student might write a letter to his Congressional representative. A daughter might write about how post-traumatic stress disorder affected her father.

Who will you write to? What are the experiences that echo in your memory, and what are your own personal stories?

Give life to your thoughts. Write a letter that you feel compelled to create but have nowhere else to send. The possibilities are as boundless as the Internet and as far-reaching as the effects of war itself.

Read excerpts from the letters that inspired the LETTERS FROM THE HEART Online Memorial and the film REGRET TO INFORM. These letters were written by director Barbara Sonneborn after her husband Jeff died.
